Could possibly be coming out to Fort Leavenworth next year. It looks real nice and very small my type of place. I am not a city person by any means but it's nice that KS City is right there if needed. Anyway I like the looks of this base but am scared to death of tornados. What is the tornado season really like do you really see that many or is it hype being in KS and all??

Any info would be appreciated!

We were there for a year for CGSC. We lived off post and were very glad we did. We had a spacious house near downtown and under BAH.

The commissary and PX are fine and the post itself is a pretty one. PEDS clinic is overall very good/friendly. Didn't have a great experience with the legal assistance at SJA so wouldn't use them again unless absolutely necessary.

There is a post event called PAIR Day where community businesses and services have tables with info. It's a great resource but be advised the companies are not necessarily endorsed by the fort. It's easy to trust a company there b/c it's on post but a company's presence there doesn't not mean it is good. However the event is worth attending.

Jack & Jill preschool is excellent and our friends with older kids loved the school on post.  Heard mixed reviews of Xavier the Catholic school so check with the school liaison officer about it.

For pets the post vet is really good though it can be tough to get an appointment. Pioneer Animal Hospital on S. 4th is a good choice.

Please be very very wary of Deb's Riverview Kennel. She markets heavily to military families at PAIR Day. My dog and several others became ill after a stay Deb's. As I asked around post I found many people had a similar bad experience there.  Just research carefully if you are thinking of boarding there.

The Countryside Kennel in Easton KS is excellent and highly-recommended. Main Street Pet Resort in Platte City MO is great for grooming and very caring for boarding though didn't have the green space we wanted for our pet. They do drop off and pick up at the PX which is nice. Ani-pals resort is by the KC Speedway and excellent as well. based on our experience these kennels are far better than Deb's and are worth the bit extra of a drive.

Baan Thai and Osaka are the two of the best restaurants in town. Outstanding food.  Marfields pub is in the "hinterlands" on 2nd Street but an excellent hole-in-the wall place. Great pub food.

There's a farmers market on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. It's OK not a huge selection. I found a caterpillar on my lettuce AFTER I washed it. So the food's fresh! but ick.

Kimberly D. says: We are now at Fort Leavenworth it a small community with a ton of post activities. So far the weather has been amazing my kids never wanna come inside. The school have a much high standard and more money to spend on the kids. Leavenworth is on the river and has a completely different landscape then what you picture for KS. Rolling hills and lovely trees.

Courtney M. asks: Can anyone recommend areas or communities not too far from post? We will be coming with a 2 month old and a 2 year old and have a large dog so we ned a place pet and child friendly :) I appreciate any help ladies!

Sierra R. says: We just bought a house in Lansing. There is a lot of military in this area both renting and owning. Its about 15 minutes from the main gate. And yes getting on post housing can be a little difficult... We live in the Carriage Crossing subdivision.

Ashley D. says: Hey Courtney! I was told I was going to have to wait at least 4 months for a house but we didn't have to wait at all once we moved here. We got one the day after we got no base. I guess you really can't count on that but maybe plan to stay in a hotel for a few weeks and have money for a deposit and rent on a place until you either buy the house you want or get on base housing. My hubby was fresh out of AIT so it sounds like your housing will be different from mine. If you go to the website down below there are pics of what the houses look like. Hope this helps :) http://www.ftleavenworthfamilyhousing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=88&Itemid=63 By the way the hotel on base you have to reserve a room that is pet friendly in advance :)

Christy F. says: We didn't have to wait either. We have 4 kids. They did try to put us in the crappy houses but we told them we wanted to see something else and ended up getting an updated house.

Irma N. says: Hi courtney when we got on post we had a house the same day just depends how picky u are.

Stephanie G. says: Courtney If you need a place to stay off post temporarily give Condotel in Lansing a call. We have stayed there many times and it is awesome for long term stays. They are basically apartments that are fully furnished with a full size kitchen and washer /dryer. Which is great to have if you have children. I think they are pet friendly and the rates are pretty reasonable.=)

Amanda T. says: We also didn't have to wait when we got here. From what I've been told the online wait list is pretty much BS and it goes by first come first serve once you arrive.

The post is mostly full of CGSC students here for only one year. Most everything revolves around their schedule, so it can be kind of strange to be permanent party

Tom and Ann?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Hair Salon is one of the best in town for cuts/color. They have some great colorists on staff and it is a nice, laid back atmosphere. Rene always cut my girls?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ hair and Ashley did my cuts/color. Carolyn is great for color too.

Has a medium size P/X, medium size commissary. No hospital- just the Munson Health Center. Has a movie theater (1 screen) with a brand new skate park and miniature golf course next door! Smaller base but has all the necessities, Shopette, Burger King, Library with lots of DVD?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s to borrow. Kansas City is only about 20 minutes away with lots of shopping :)

The Command General and Staff College is here, as well as the School of Advanced Military Studies. I know there is an MP unit here and I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m sure some other things. It is primarily known for schools, the disciplinary barracks and the federal prison.

Life Lessons of a Military Wife says:

Do you like hand crafted items? Are you a big fan of wrought iron and homemade wooden furniture? What about jewelry, pottery and personalized items? Now put that thought aside for a minute. Do you ever wonder what prisoners do in our prisons each day? I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve lived near prisons in the past, where prisoners hobbled shoes, fixed furniture and made license plates. What if you could put our love of hand crafted decorative and gift items together with keeping prisoners busy and teaching them something in the process? Well, someone has already thought of that, and if you are a military ID card holder, you can walk away with HUGE savings with up to 80% off retail from my estimates.

When I was at Ft Leavenworth, I had the chance to go by the Disciplinary Barracks Store. They actually have a store, showcasing the prisoner?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s work. Do you know all those wrought iron Longaberger basket-type decorative items you are familiar with? I saw the exact same shelves, tiered items, pot racks and basket holders I am familiar with. I am just using Longaberger as an example here. I also saw beautiful furniture, chandeliers and decorative items. Even though you will find some oak in their furniture, for the most part, you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll see quality hardwoods just beautifully done. Our little group of ladies who visited the joint where just entranced by the bench that folds into a picnic table and kept folding it over and over again. That was pretty ingenious?¢‚Ǩ¬¶and we had to do a double take at the price it was that low. If your husband is the carpenter type, they?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll even sell you the hardware and ship you the plans, so you can use your own wood and put it together yourself.

When you browse through the store, you have a hard time believing a prisoner made some of these wonderful jewelry pieces, pots, artwork. A lot of care and talent can be found here. I was humbly impressed to say the least.

I made a note to tell my husband, that they also do embroidery, screen printed products and engraving. The display cases were loaded down with wooden boxes, plaques, glass and crystal mementos and even handy display shelves for your husband?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s ubiquitous military coin collection. All of these items can be personalized as well.

Why am I bothering to tell you this and most of us don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t even live there? Because they ship! Most items they ship via FEDEX or UPS I was told. If you are interested in some of the heavy wrought iron stuff, how about getting together with your neighborhood girlfriends? If you fill a pallet with stuff, it only costs $150 to truck that pallet to you. If you put five items on there, you are already well ahead of the game and are still getting the items at a steal.

Be sure to stop by their site and see what they have to offer. If you have picked out some items, just send them an email, and they will give you a shipping quote. Again, only US military ID card holders may order. Check their website for any exceptions to that, as there are some. BTW, if you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t find something in the right dimensions, they will even build it to your specifications. Just ask! With all this being said, do you have a civilian prison in your area? Perhaps check out what they have to offer. They may have a similar program. Ft Leavenworth calls these things ?¢‚Ǩ?ìvocational products?¢‚Ǩ¬ù.

Let me know what you order from the prison store! I myself really liked the three tiered pie stand, and my husband has so many coins?¢‚Ǩ¬¶those display shelves would look nice too?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.hmmm, I still have some time before Christmas?¢‚Ǩ¬¶

Fort Leavenworth is a family oriented type post. We Loved it there. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a small post but very pretty. There is just so much history. We enjoyed all the activities that either housing or ACS hosted throughout the year. I would also check out the spouses Club

Here?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s some base info I sent a friend who was coming here. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s all just my personal opinion:

PX & Commissary:

The PX and commissary are pretty nice. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a smaller base, so they aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t that big. The PX doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t carry a whole lot of items, but they just did some renovations, and have upgraded their food court, which has a Church?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s chicken, Taco Bell, Anthony?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Pizza and Charley?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s steakery, as well as a Burger King across the street. They did also add a guns & ammunition shop to the PX, which is apparently a big hit. The clothing and Sales is in the main PX, and it is often lacking things bigger PX?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s might have. There is an optometrist, and eye glass shop, barber shop, beauty salon, flower shop, Gamestop and Starbucks in the PX as well as an embroidery shop with a lot of neat custom made items. The commissary actually has a lot for how small it is, and they are very helpful in ordering custom items for those with allergies or overseas items, if they can.

Base activities:
There are usually a lot of activities on base. MWR usually puts on several activities a month, and other clubs will have their own activities as well. There is a lot for families to do on post. There are two small lakes where fishing is allowed, a skate park, a miniature golf course, the post theater, the Rod & Gun club, Stable Activities is VERY active here, and has one of the nicest stables I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve ever seen on a post, a bowling alley, two gyms, one with an indoor pool, and several nice eating establishments that have their own activities, as well. Here?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a link to FT Leavenworth MWR:
http://www.fortleavenworthmwr.com/

Things to do in the area: There aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t many things to do in the immediate area, there is a nice park in the city of Leavenworth, and a nice, small downtown area with some quaint small shops as well as a Farmers Market on the weekends, but you usually have to drive to get to the good stuff. There is a Super Wal-mart, Kmart and Home depot, as well as a small mall with a few stores, and two small movie theaters in town. Kansas City is only a 20-40 minute drive, depending on where you are going, though, and it has EVERYTHING!

Here?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s some links for things to do in the Leavenworth area:

Jobs? (on post and off):
You have your usual opportunities for employment in the are, retail, restaurant, a few factories, like Hallmark, as well. Much of this base is run by government/civilian employees as well, so finding a job isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t too hard. Here?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a helpful link:

http://garrison.leavenworth.army.mil?¢‚Ǩ¬¶employment.asp

Other aspects of this base/surrounding city:
The base itself is very nice, the main post area has a lot of historic homes and building, with a lot of history to it, and much of the base is in a park like setting. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s very beautiful here, and while the town of Leavenworth isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t super great, there are many places to travel to in the area that are wonderful. The people here are usually pretty friendly, being in the midwest, the weather leaves something to be desired, a lot of thunderstorms (tornado warnings), ice and some snow in the winter and heat and humidity in the summer. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s nice having the definite seasons, though, and we have definitely had worse, lol! Overall it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a pretty nice base, but it hasn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t been one of our favorites. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s small, and it is not like you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re typical base. There are probably 2 humvees at the entire base, there is very little to see that screams ARMY, like tanks or helicopters, lol, but I guess on the plus side, you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have to worry about artillery fire shaking your whole house at 3 am, either. Many of the tenant units have to travel to FT Riley or FT Leonard- Wood for their training, though, because of it.

Interesting area here.
For shopping, there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s
Legends (an outdoor shopping area)
Oak Park (an indoor shopping mall);
Zona Rosa (an outdoor shopping area) and more
You definitely have to have a car to enjoy the area. And, don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t be afraid to explore these small surrounding towns. ?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a very nice surprise!! :)
